Peer Support Service
The Peer Support Services program is a preventative mental health program under the NYS Office of Mental Health designed to improve and support people with emotional and behavioral well-being.
Peer Support Services are individualized services provided by certified Peer Specialists to assist individuals facing social or emotional life challenges. Using their own experiences, Peer Specialists teach skills and offer encouragement to help others build meaningful lives in their communities.
Numerous research studies have indicated that when added as a primary service to treatment, Peer Specialists/Advocates play a significant role in improving health and wellness, because of their ability to build trust, form one-to-one relationships, and foster hope for others.
CoPeers
CoPeers works with state designated Mental Health Outpatient Treatment and Rehabilitative Services providers, also known in short as MHOTRS clinics, to ensure Individuals are matched up with a Peer Specialist/Advocate that can best service their needs.
CoPeers support staff are committed to bringing individualized, culturally appropriate services to every individual in need of extra support to ensure their mental health and wellbeing.

Peer Specialist
Peer Specialists/Advocates know what the struggle is like because they’ve experienced similar challenges. They can understand the thoughts and feelings of people going through resilience and recovery or caring for a child with social and emotional challenges.
Peer Specialists/Advocates utilize their lived experience and expertise of resilience and recovery with others in their work.
Peer Specialists/Advocates are cultural and recovery ambassadors - they promote connection and inspire hope.
Self-Advocacy And Empowerment
Support individuals in discovering their strengths and concerns and encourage active participation in life.
Guideing individuals to express their fears, expectations, and anxieties to promote positive effective communication.
Engagement, Bridging, And Transition Support
Facilitating meetings between individuals and service providers. As well as organize and prepare documents needed for these services.
Modeling of recovery lifestyle, including participation in recovery activities, like coffee or tea at a coffee shop, attending a recovery celebration, participating in a wellness activity and similar activities.
Peer Recovery Supports And Counseling
Providing non-clinical treatment planning support that incorporates life areas (e.g., community connectedness, physical wellness, spirituality, employment, self-help, etc.).
Assisting with learning and practicing independent living and
coping skills
Community Connections And Natural Supports
Helping the individuals identify and become involved in leisure and recreational activities in their community.
Assisting individuals with inclusion and support in their own communities.
Pre-Crisis And Crisis Support Services
Providing support before or during a crisis or a relapse.
Developing and implementing wellness, crisis diversion plans, or wellness promotion plans
Eligibility Criteria
No age restrictions
Enrolled in Medicaid
Facing self-reported social, emotional, or behavioral challenges
Open to exploring counseling services
